Company Overview

MW Engineers assists companies to deliver critical infrastructure projects, primarily in the rail sector.

Established in 2004, MW Engineers provides specialist rail consultancy, technical assurance, competency services, signalling simulation, factory-built electrical solutions and purpose-designed rail products across Australia and New Zealand.

Our business is now built around a consulting-first partnership model. We work alongside rail operators, contractors, maintainers, manufacturers and project delivery organisations that require additional technical leadership, independent review, specialist knowledge or access to proven rail technology.

Rather than replacing a client's field delivery workforce, MW Engineers strengthens the capability already in place. Clients can engage us for a defined technical issue, a particular project stage or continuing support across the project lifecycle.

Our Partnership Model

Infrastructure projects rarely require every specialist discipline for the full duration of delivery. MW Engineers can draw upon an established network of experienced consultants and subconsultants to form a team around the specific requirements of each assignment.

This model gives clients access to senior signalling, testing, assurance, competency, electrical and project expertise when it is needed. The team can expand around critical activities and disperse when the work is complete, while MW Engineers provides a clear point of coordination and accountability.

Our position as a consulting-led organisation allows us to support companies that maintain their own engineering and field teams. Targeted site involvement remains available where specialist knowledge, technical leadership or familiarity with MW Engineers' equipment provides direct value.

1. Rail Engineering Consultancy and TIC Support

MW Engineers provides senior rail signalling advice and Tester in Charge (TIC) consulting to support the planning, governance and assurance of testing and commissioning activities.

Capabilities include:

  • testing and commissioning strategies
  • review of project scope, staging and testing obligations
  • possession and commissioning planning support
  • test resource and competency planning
  • review of test plans, procedures and traceability arrangements
  • definition of roles, responsibilities and technical interfaces
  • commissioning readiness and go/no-go review support
  • targeted senior TIC advice and oversight
  • commissioning evidence, handover and close-out reviews
  • mentoring and development of testing personnel

Where a client requires additional TIC capacity, MW Engineers can provide suitably qualified TIC resources for defined project roles. This may support concurrent work fronts, major possessions, specialist technical requirements or temporary workload peaks.

TIC resources engaged through MW Engineers operate within our certified management-system framework. Every person must also hold the qualifications, authorisations and network competencies applicable to the assigned role.

2. Verification, Assurance and Technical Advisory

MW Engineers provides independent review and assurance services to help clients demonstrate that safety-critical work has been properly planned, checked, controlled and supported by defensible evidence.

Capabilities include:

  • independent signalling verification and assurance
  • testing and commissioning assurance
  • engineering and test-documentation reviews
  • project readiness and operational handover reviews
  • configuration, traceability and change-control reviews
  • systems integration and interface advice
  • technical risk and obsolescence advice
  • asset and maintenance evidence reviews
  • technical due diligence and project close-out support

Independence requirements are assessed for each engagement. Where independent assurance is required, appropriate personnel, separation of duties and governance controls are established to protect the objectivity of the review.

3. Signalling Competency Assessment and Advice

MW Engineers supports organisations and individuals navigating Australia's rail signalling competency requirements.

Services include:

  • independent assessment of signalling competence
  • review of role-specific evidence and task exposure
  • identification of competency gaps and development needs
  • mapping roles to required signalling competencies
  • advice on competency governance, records and evidence
  • support for audits, project mobilisation and network engagement
  • mentoring and technical development of signalling personnel
  • advice on practical refresher and technical-currency programs

Competency decisions are based on demonstrated evidence and the requirements of the applicable role, network and authorised competency framework.

4. Hitachi MISS Training and Signalling Simulation

MW Engineers operates the Hitachi Microlok Interlocking Simulation System (MISS), providing a controlled environment for staff training, technical currency, project preparation and signalling-system investigation.

MISS can support:

  • structured staff familiarisation and refresher activity
  • scenario-based training for testers, TIC personnel, designers and maintainers
  • practice involving equipment failures, incorrect indications and loss of train detection
  • level-crossing warning-time and sequencing scenarios
  • testing and commissioning preparation
  • offline examination of Microlok II application logic
  • fault investigation and controlled reproduction of unexpected behaviour
  • technical demonstrations and stakeholder walkthroughs

The client's competent trainer or assessor remains responsible for defining learning outcomes, observing performance and making any formal competency decision. MW Engineers provides the simulation platform, technical support and scenario-development capability.

5. Level Crossing Consulting, Audits and Technology

MW Engineers supports level crossing renewals, upgrades and asset-management programs through specialist consultancy, independent audits, technical assurance and access to proven international technology.

Capabilities include:

  • level crossing strategy, scoping and technical advice
  • condition, safety and compliance audits
  • review of project requirements, standards and interfaces
  • testing and commissioning strategy
  • renewal, obsolescence and lifecycle advice
  • maintenance registers, asset information and safety-interface support
  • technical due diligence for controlled and passive crossings
